UAV's of Iran

1) Ababil
2) Mohajer
3)Saeqeh
4)Lark
5) Future Developments

Ababil UAV

Translated into “swallow”, the Ababil is a reconnaissance UAV, though it has ability to function as an improvised cruise missile. It has its origins in the need to monitor the Afghan civil war, as well as US fleets in the Persian Gulf during the 90’s. The UAV has a forward-canard configuration which reduces the speed possible before a stall by 30%. More then a hundred Ababils have already been delivered to the armed forces, with possible sales to Malaysia.[1]

The UAV is launched via a pneumatic air launcher mounted on pickups or a special truck integrated with the control system, by far the most common system, or by RATO (rocket assisted take-off). Recovery can either be conventional on a runway using skids, or using a parachute where geography prevents a skid-landing.[2]

All models of the Ababil come available with an automatic guidance system and autopilot called the “Shahid Norouzi”. The autopilot is capable of launching the UAV, piloting it to the target zone using INS and GPS and performing the mission parameters, whether it be recon or attack and returning for recovery. Its range for earlier models is 60 km, while the later models that utilizes GPS technology is around 120 km. Movement is not as advanced as it would be with a human operator, with the autopilot only using basic guidance with roll and altitude adjustments, couples with a gyroscope for auto-stabilization. Ground operators are able to override and change the parameters at any time.[3]

It is available in multiple configurations, although the lack of a codified labelling system can be initially confusing.

Ababil-3

The initial model developed basic surveillance only with daylight still or video camera. May or may not have real time imagery. Earliest models were constructed of aluminium.[4] In addition to the CCD TV camera, a miss-distance-indicator (MDI) is also carried which, using acoustics, determines the accuracy of projectiles such as bullets or missiles, allowing for accuracy corrections. [5]

Ababil-5/S

Advanced Intelligence, surveillance, recon (ISR) model, available with Real time imagery up/downlink[6] Unlike earlier models it is manufactured with lightweight composites. Like the Ababil-3 it is also fitted with a video and still camera as well as a MDI.

In April 2009, the US army confirmed that it had shot down an Iranian drone loitering over the Eastern Iraqi border, most likely spying on the MEK dissidents within their Iraqi camp. It was confirmed to be an Ababil drone, but the variant was in question, the length of time it was airborne indicates the 5/S variant due to the longer loiter time granted by composite construction.[7]

Ababil-T/R

Attack model, fitted with a 40 kg warhead.[8] Dual tales distinguish the Ababil-T from the Ababil-R, however it should be noted that most analysts use the term “Ababil-T” to refer to any version of the attack version. It was this version that Hezbollah used to spy on Israel during the 2006 war, and was subsequently shot down by an IAF F-16 with a Python 5 missile. Because it was travelling at night, it is likely that this version has been fitted with thermal sights like those on the Mohajer-4[9].

Ababil-B

Target drone, outfitted with radar augmentation.[10] Presumably otherwise identical to the 3 or 5/S versions, though without the surveillance package.

Ababil Jet[11]

In the early stages of development, the Ababil Jet is a normal Ababil powered by a Toulue-4 jet engine, the same powerplant behind the Noor AShM. This would make the UAV essentially a cruise missile. There is also a Toloue-5 engine that is more powerful as well as being throttleable.

Mohajer

One of the earliest UAV designs, developed during the Iran-Iraq war, it was the earliest historical use of a UCAV, firing RPG’s from wing pylons. It was then used in reconnaissance over Afghanistan during the civil war in the 1990’s. Eight have been exported to Hezbollah and used in over flights of Israel in 2004 and 2005.[13] It is often reported that this is the UAV that was shot down over Israel in 2006, due to the dual tail boom configuration, however this is merely a mistake overlooking the twin-tail attack version of the Ababil.

Launch and recovery o f the Mohajer is the same as the Ababil, either by pneumatic air launch from ramps towed by trucks, the same ramps can be used for a RATO launch. Some versions, particularly the Mohajer-2, are equipped with wheels instead of skids, making the a conventional take-off possible. Recovery is most commonly by skids or wheels, as one can guess from the prevalence of them on all models.

Like the Ababil, it comes in multiple variants, fortunately they are easier to identify, being a clear numerical pattern.

Mohajer 1[14] [15]

Early example used in the Iran-Iraq war, short ranged with a battle radius of only 30 km it was most likely the testbed for employing RPG’s on UAV’s.

Mohajer 2[16] [17]

Identifiable from other versions via its cigarette shaped fuselage and its wingtips being perfectly horizontal. The last of the Mohajer series flown during the war, it is uncommonly seen with wheels instead of skids. It does NOT have the ability to carry a parachute.

* Specifications – Mohajer 2
o Wingspan: 3 m
o Tailspan:0.92 m
o Length: 2.87 m
o Height: 1.03 m
o Max Weight: 85 kg
o Max Speed: 200 km/hr

o Endurance: 1.5 hr
o Launch: Pneumatic, or RATO
o Recovery: Skids or wheels
o Payload: video, still, and IR cameras w/1 meter resolution at 5,000ft, color or monochrome. RPG rockets

Mohajer-3[18] [19]

Often called the ‘dorna’, the Mohajer-3 is a development of the Mohajer-2, they are superficially very similar, the distinguishing features being a slight downturn on the end of the wings. It is unclear whether it has the ability to be recovered via parachute. The main difference is range and endurance, most likely achieved to lightening the system or a change in the engine, though there is no indicators of the latter.

* Specifications
o Speed: 180 km/hr
o Operational Range: 100 km
o Endurance: 3-5 hr
o Launch: Pneumatic or RATO
o Recovery: Skid or wheel
o Payload: Still or video camera, same or better system the the Mohajer 2. Possibly RPG Rockets

Mohajer-4[20] [21] [22] [23]

First tested in 2004, the Mohajer-4 presents the first visually radical change within the Mohajer family, unlike the previous cigarette shaped models, the Mohajer-4 has a fairly large rectangular shaped fuselage with a wider tail-boom and a trio of shock-absorbing skids rather then the dual ski-type ones of previous generations. To power the larger body it carries a newer more powerful engine. It is constructed of low-observability composite materials. To complement the fabrication materials, it carries the equally advanced Hyarat-3 guidance system that functions much like the Shahid Norouzi system for the Ababil. It has been tested on the eastern border patrolling against drug traffikers

It also goes by the name “Hodhod”

* Specifications
o Length: 2.9 m
o Max Weight: 175 kg
o Speed: 180 km/hr
o Ceiling: 5,485 m
o Operational Range: 150 km
o Endurance: 5-7 hr
o Launch: Pneumatic or RATO
o Recovery: Parachute or regular landing
o Payload: Regular and IR Camera. Possibly RPG Rockets
o Powerplant: 25 hp flat-twin piston engine, 2 blade pusher prop

Saeqeh[24]

The Saeqeh, not to be confused with the battlefield rocket, anti-tank missile, or fighter plane is a target drone demonstrated alongside the Mohajer in 1999.[25] The Saeqeh is more of a target drone compared to the other UAV’s mentioned, it has no conventional recon potential and no UCAV ability. Its non-training use is very limited

Saeqeh-1

Delta-winged with a cigarette fuselage and a single vertical tail, it has roughly the same dimensions as the Mohajer 2/3, though with a much shorter wing span. Its listed speed as 300 km is extremely unbelievable given the speeds of the other UAV’s and should be assumed to be somewhere around 160-180 km/hr. Its launch appears to be soley RATO with no pneumatic launches ever seen. Recovery, absent destruction, is by parachute.

Saeqeh 2

Outwardly identical to the Saeqeh-1, there are several important improvements. First is the inclusion of an automatic guidance on it, eliminating the need for human interface during training. It is by all likliehood one of the above mentioned systems as I do not see a completely new system developed for a target drone, although a low-cost, extremely minimalist version is conceivable. Another important feature is the addition of decoy system that emits specific IR, radar and radio signals, not only to use in training air defence operators, but to serve as decoys against enemy air and air-defence assets. It also has a longer range at 50 meters, probably due to the inclusion of composites as with the other UAV’s.

Lark[26]

One of the few foreign UAV’s, along with the US built target drones, in service with Iran. Originally from South Africa, the Lark functions as defence suppression with a built-in anti-radiation warhead, in the same manner as the Ababil-T/R, though it does have surveillance capabilities. It can be launches via RATO from either ground or sea, or from a conventional pneumatic launch on land. Recovery is via parachute.

The UAV itself is a large flying-wing with four vertical stabalizers, two wingtip, two on the leading edge of the wing. Again, it is roughly the same size category as Iran’s other UAV’s.

* Specifications:
o Wing Span: 2.10 m
o Length: 2.43 m
o Height: 0.55 m
o Max Payload: 25 kg
o Max Launch Weight: 120 kg
o Cruise Speed: 113 knots
o Loiter Speed: 70-120 knots
o Ceiling: 15,000 ft
o Range: 54 nm
o Endurance: 4 hours
o Powerplant:
+ 38 hp UEL AR 731 Rotary
+ Two blade push prop

Future Developments

Anyone who has followed Iranian defence issues for any amount of time knows full well that deception and vague promises and announcements is business-as-usual. In 2007, then-head of the IRGC, Yahya Safavi claimed the manufacture of undetectable drones The material and the shape of this drone make it undetectable for radars, so it can not be targeted”.[27] Of course it could be the Mohajer-4 that features LO features, or it could have been a new drone altogether, or then again, it could have been nothing, another feature in the deception war that is the Iranian military, or just as likely it could have been nothing more then a mundane translation error. Then, two years later, in 2009, Brig. General Shahsafi announced that a stealth UAV was built on the 1/7th scale and would be shown soon.[28] The most recently, in fact, just a week ago from the writing of this article, it was promised that this model would be shown at the Sacred Defence Week Events.

So, I asked the question before, is this just hot-air being blown around by the Iranian brass? Its certainly not undocumented, to bring up recent examples again, we were promised a full squadron of Saeqeh fighters during the Sacred Defence Week, but again we only saw the four we had seen before.

I do not think so, it is my opinion that Iran is developing a full-size, LO (note: not stealth) UCAV much like the predator. Of course I don’t think things are going according to original plans, but then again, it never does for any nation, look at the timeline of any major defense project by any nation and you will see a list of setbacks. But I predict that within the near future you will see the fruits of this project, it might even be the Mohajer-5, we have seen very promising strides with that program in terms of attack capability. One of the most telling pieces of evidence I have seen for this has gone virtually unreported in the internet defence circles that focus on Iran and the middle east. That is the shooting-down / or crash of multiple US and UK UAV’s in Iran. There is no positive identification of the types of UAV’s beyond there were three types of US or UK drones, however we can be fairly sure they were AT LEAST medium-sized like the Shadow 200 UAV. The technology boost from a captured Predator would be immense, infact, the UAV announced in 2007 had nearly almost the same exact range as a predator, around 700 km.[29] And this was in 2007, given previous developments; they could have made a generational gap in that time frame. But as with most things in the Iranian armed forces, only time will tell.
